The most unrealistic element here is that they worked to show a world where homophobia doesn't exist. The director and writer both being women also gives it a different viewpoint, and the female gaze is both refreshing and (as a gay man) enjoyable. No one is alarmed, concerned, or otherwise any different acting around gay people. Other characters are strongly hinted as being gay, but it's all presented in a very matter of fact way. The relationship that develops between Yuri and Victor is natural feeling, and avoids stereotypes. I'm watching it, but it's more a slice of life comedy than anything, and again, not really something the average gay man would likely relate to.
It's yaoi, but the subject matter-a 23 year old and his 15 year old adopted brother are in love-squicks a lot of people. Junjo Romantica and S ekai Ichi Hatsukoi were interesting, but really indulge in those ridiculous stereotypes I mentioned above. As a story about the pressures people face when nearing the end of high school and trying to figure out what comes next, it's not bad. It's one of those shows that wants to suggest things without taking a stance. Pretty, muscular boys in skimpy bathing suits constantly drape themselves all over each other, but display all the sexuality of a genital-free Ken doll. Free! was fun, but tons of fanservice aside, wasn't yaoi or gay themed.

I've seen some of the series mentioned earlier. Nice way to discount gays' ability to form stable relationships! Uke and Seme? Please! Most gay men are much more ambidextrous! I also hate the 'I'm not gay but I like you' stereotype, and I especially hate the lack of trust, where the second someone walks out of a room, their boyfriend starts worrying that they are cheating and really doesn't love them. While I hear that's changing, it's changing slowly, and it's hard to market to a small demographic that's often closeted.Īs for yaoi, I've watched and enjoyed some, but I have to go into it knowing it will very likely be unrealistic and deal with the same old tired stereotypes gay men have to work hard to overcome, even where people are generally tolerant of gays. I think one issue with anime marketed towards gay males is that homosexuality is still largely unaccepted in Japan. It's not that gay men can't appreciate other types of anime, it's more wondering if there's any anime that is marketed to gays or at least avoids the stereotypes. And there are guys in the "top ranking by male members" thing quite a bit (and girls in the "top ranking by female members", too).

So if it doesn't bother them, why does it bother you? Also, now shonen manga are full of characters made to appeal to that demographic because of that audience responding to them and buying merchandise.Īnd "ゲイ” and "ホモ" tags are popping up on Pixiv a lot, sometimes on yaoi, but often on what you're looking for. You shouldn't let things like target audience bother you - the only reason yaoi is a thing at all is because they just didn't care that Shonen Jump was for little boys. There are other anime besides sports anime that have attractive male characters who aren't seme/uke types, and aren't reverse harems. I think "Heroic Legend of Arslan" fits both tastes, though.
With actual plot, without the seme-uke stuff and other romance-genre trappings. I dunno, say what you want about "real men", whatever their sexuality, but I see it as my personal mission to bring back the long-haired pretty boy. See the sports trend, especially "All-Out". it's not.)Īnd anyway, "fujoshi" tastes are moving towards manly-men. Even though people somehow got it into their heads that it's basically the girl version of what you're asking for. (And yes, Love Live is geared to that just as much as the jiggle shows are. I don't get caught up over the fact that the creators were picturing big fat sweaty 35-year-old male otaku when they drew those characters. I don't need a show to be targeted to girls in order for me to enjoy it.

I'm a girl and I like the girls in Love Live, High School DxD, both the guys and girls in Code Geass. Neither are "real straight men", "real straight women", etc.
